6 Tips for Reigning in the Bass in Your Mix
by Joe Gilder - Mixing, Recording
15 Comments - Leave a comment!
big bad bass- It's been said that the low end of your mix is
"what separates the men from the boys." But it can be really hard to
get right, right?
Every mix poses its own unique challenges, and I never mix two songs
the same way. However, here are 6 tips for getting a handle on the low
end in your mix. Some of these may seem odd or strange. Give `em a
shot. They seem to work for me.
Here we go...

Big Honkin' End-of-the-Year Sale
by Joe Gilder - Site News
8 Comments - Leave a comment!
Everybody likes a good sale. We get all excited when a 20% off coupon
comes in the mail to our favorite music store.
This ain't no 20% off sale. This is buy one get one FREE.
And it runs until the end of the year...for the rest of 2011.
If you've been following HSC for a while, you know I rarely do sales.
But when I DO have a sale, I want it to be epic. I want it to provide
an insane amount of value to you. I want you to get a lot out of it.
Gear is Great
I love a good piece of gear -- a shiny new microphone or a sexy new
preamp. While I hope you get something awesome for Christmas, set aside
some of your Christmas money to make sure you're getting the most out
of your equipment. All the new gear in the world doesn't guarantee
great-sounding recordings and mixes.
The difference? You.
Invest in Yourself
There are two basic ways to invest in your studio -- you can invest in
gear or you can invest in you. I recommend both. If you don't have ANY
equipment and couldn't sit down and record something today, then please
DON'T buy anything from me. You need some gear first.
If you have gear, however, chances are you already have everything you
need to make fantastic recordings you can be proud to share.
So take advantage of this two-for-one sale and brush up on your skills.

5 Stereo Mic Techniques for Acoustic Guitar (or ANY acoustic instrument)
by Joe Gilder - Engineering

If you record acoustic guitar, then chances are you've either
played around with stereo recording or at least thought about it. But
maybe you're not sure which techniques to use and the pros and cons of
each.
I think I can help.
I've recorded acoustic guitar more than any other instrument, so I've
spent countless hours of quality time with my guitar and a pair of
microphones. And I've gotten pretty good at getting great acoustic
guitar tone.
What is stereo recording?
Stereo recording is simply using two microphones to capture a
two-channel "stereo" image of the source. By panning the signals left
and right, you can create a sense of space and width and depth, simply
by using two microphones instead of one.

Barter? I Hardly Know Her! - Why You May Not Need to Spend a Dime on Your
Next Recording Project
by Joe Gilder - In the Studio, Production

Empty Pockets- The day I sold my bass was a good day.
I had a problem.
See, I assumed that simply because I was capable of recording all the
instruments on my recording projects that I should.
Just because you can doesn't mean you should.
I bought that little Fender Jazz bass, thinking to myself, "Wow, Joe.
You're so impressive. Imagine how it's gonna feel when you tell
someone, `Yeah, I played all the instruments on this song.' They'll
think you're amazing. Heck, you're like Dave Grohl."
I'm not like Dave Grohl. If you're dripping with THAT much talent, then
yes, you can probably pull off playing everything on the record.
I'm not Dave Grohl, and chances are neither are you.

7 Tips for a Successful Live Concert Recording [With Audio Example!]
by Joe Gilder - Live Sound, Recording
22 Comments - Leave a comment!
SL1602- A couple months ago I got a gig recording a live
concert. It wasn't your typical show. One singer, one piano, in a big
old church. In addition to recording the concert, I was also in charge
of running sound.
Everything turned out really well, but there was a LOT to do and think
about to ensure a smooth concert and a great-sounding recording. For
one thing, the singer was going to sing several songs with a handheld
mic, and several more songs without a mic (opera stuff), but I still
needed to record her voice for that.
I don't do a ton of live concert recording, but if you're a home studio
guy, chances are there are opportunities for you to take your gear "on
location" and record a live concert. Might be a new opportunity you
hadn't considered before.
To that end, I've got 7 tips for you to ensure a successful live
concert recording:

Making Money From Your Home Studio
by Joe Gilder - Business

Money- This is a guest post from Nick Lewis of Brighton
Mastering.
After reading Joe's post about charging for your work, I had a few
thoughts about home studio engineers starting out, and the current
state of the recording industry.
As an online mastering engineer, I get sent very respectable sounding
home-brew mixes all the time, but a lot of home studio owners don't
feel confident enough to charge for their work. Your studio and your
skills are an asset, and there's no reason you shouldn't benefit from
that.

Enter your search keyword(s) and the keyword "zorgium" into the search input field of

Heads up: There's an ongoing spamdexing of Google searchbot algorithms. Sites that are 'copies of copies' and cloaked sites which include Zorgium keywords presented to search engine crawlers yet garbage content presented to human visitors were hosted on thousands of IP addresses and domains registered immediately after the introduction of Zorgium in November of 2009. The Hostgator/'The Planet'/Softlayer datacenters in Texas seem to be the epicenter of this activity in conjunction with anonymously registered domains of various TLD's but primarily .info domains at Godaddy which, in our opinion, has some sort of connection to the domains of goldmint.in and goldmint.org. Google has begun to notice this and has begun to lower the ranking of these sites and put our original sites back on top of the search rankings. These actions, as far as we can tell, negatively impact the use of the keyword 'zorgium' as a search term and provided little benefit, if any, to the perpetrators.
ZORGIUM note to content providers: If you don't want your page to appear in Zorgium's search abstraction then put an exclusion for "Zorgium" in your web server's robots.txt file.
